Extra large floor tiles

What are extra large floor tiles?  Typically, large format floor tiles are 600 x 600mm or larger. As manufacturing technology continues to innovate, tiles are getting bigger so we are now seeing tiles that are 800 x 800, 900 x 900, 1200 x 600 and 1200 x 1200 becoming the go-to for projects.   But with all this choice, picking the right size tile for your project and knowing how big you go, may seem a little daunting. So we’ve put together a little buying guide full of useful information and tips! Read on!

Does tile size matter?

In a nutshell, yes it does. The size of tile you choose can have a dramatic impact on your overall design. Tiling with extra large floor tiles means there are fewer grout lines and that gives a more minimal feel to spaces. The latest floor tiles have rectified or straight tile edges, and that means minimal grout lines  of just 3mm for floors. By choosing a co-ordinating grout, lines can almost “disappear” making floors appear almost seamless.

Regardless of the size of your space or room, smaller tiles will mean more grout lines and that can make a space look and feel busy.

Having said all that, room size and other factors may dictate how large you can go with your tile choice so it is always wise to check your preferred tile options with your tiler first.

800 x 800mm is a lovely tile size that is big enough to feel large format, yet still easy enough to handle from an installation perspective. Many of our 800 x 800mm large floor tiles feature an indoor 9mm tile in a matt finish with a co-ordinating outdoor tiles in 2cm thickness with antislip finishes so you can run the same tile across both inside and outside spaces.

Our 900 x 900mm extra large floor tiles feel big and luxurious and won’t break the budget either. We have a whole host of tiles in this size and have sold more of this tile size than most. It is a great size for open plan spaces.

As tile size increases, thickness reduces so our 1000 x 1000 mm extra large floor tiles are in 8mm thickness. Many of these tiles also feature a 2cm thick tile for outside areas. This is fast becoming a hugely popular tile size.

If you are seeking something very special then 1200 x 1200mm is your go-to size. These really are big tiles so require come careful consideration from a lifting and installation perspective. Pallets are also deemed ‘oversize’ so there are some additional cost considerations for deliveries sometimes, but if you can stretch to it, this is a hard tile size to beat. They have luxury written all over them.

If you don’t want to go square then most of our collections feature a 1200 x 600mm tile size. Rectangular tiles present the opportunity to think about laying patterns. You may want to stack the tiles or you may decide to stagger in brick bond pattern. If you do opt for the latter, the overlap should not exceed 33%. This is because all porcelain from the most cost effective to more expensive tiles have a slight curve along their length and you don’t want the highest and lowest points of your tile meeting.

For wood planks we have a beautiful selection of extra large floor tiles in 1510 x 240mm. Our large format porcelain planks are so realistic. For wide plank porcelain tiles the classic way to install is with staggered joints. This makes for the most realistic look and finish. The same applies regards installation as teh 1200 x 600mm tiles above.

Extra large floor tiles in summary

Extra large floor tiles can make your space feel spacious, open and calm because there are less grout lines and areas feel less busy. They are especially good for large open plan floors where you might want to run the same tile across several areas and want to create a feeling of flow. For smaller areas it is always worth checking with your tiler if your chosen tiles are suitable, but even in small rooms, extra large floor tiles can make spaces feel more open.
