Large Format Tiles in a Small Bathroom Makeover

It may sound like magic, but using large format tiles in a small bathroom makeover really can make your small bathroom feel larger. Let us explain. Large format porcelain tiles minimise grout lines. Because these tiles are big in size, there are less grout lines in the space and that produces a more seamless, smooth look and feel to even the smallest of bathrooms. In fact, far from shying away form larger tiles in smaller rooms, choosing a bigger tile can actually benefit the overall design.

Bathroom design has moved well beyond the functional. So even with the small bathroom makeover, we are creating spaces in which we can relax and unwind in style. We are designing rooms that are akin to a luxury hotel or spa and large format porcelain tiles play a vital role.

What do we mean by large format? It is generally acknowledged that large format tiles start at a 600 x 600mm size with 800 x 800, 1200 x 600, 900 x 900, 1m x 1m and 1200 x 1200mm formats all falling under the large format porcelain tiles banner.

Grout lines can make spaces feel busy so you can minimise the number of grout lines on walls and floors with larger tiles.  Many large format porcelain tiles also feature rectified tile edges which means grout lines are as slim as 3mm. This also adds to the feeling of spaciousness with simple, clean lines especially when grout colour blends with your chosen tiles.

Why use large format porcelain tiles in your small bathroom makeover?

  1. Walls and floors

Not only can these large format porcelain tiles adorn your bathroom walls, they can also grace your floors too, allowing for one cohesive design. For the simplest of design, opt for the same tile for wall and floor and always check with your tiler about the suitability of your chosen tiles for your room.

It is also worth noting that some ceramic tiles are available in large format too. Ceramic tiles are easier to cut than porcelain tiles so they can be a good choice for smaller bathroom walls, especially those with lots of tricky cuts.

  1. Durability

Porcelain is highly durable. This dense material is water-resistant making it perfect for daily bathroom use. Moreover, the non-porous surface of porcelain means cleaning is quick, simple and minimal.

  1. Versatility

With a plethora of designs, large format porcelain tiles are available in every kind of style you can think of. Porcelain mimics other materials so you can get the design you want with all the hardwearing performance and ease of cleaning that porcelain delivers.

  1. Luxurious aesthetic

And, finally, what it’s all really about: the look. Large format porcelain tiles create a charming space. Fewer grout lines will produce an unmatched sense of space in your bathroom with a seamless visual flow.  Whether you are looking to bring a sense of grandeur to your bathroom space, create a room with that spa like feel or want something light, bright and airy, with designs that include everything from marble to cement, concrete to stone, metallic to terrazzo and more, it’s easy to do with large porcelain tiles.

Design ideas for your small bathroom makeover using large format tiles

If you are sold on the many benefits of large format porcelain tiles like we are, then aswell as tile size and design it is worth also thinking about tile colour and finish.

Colour & Finish

With tile tones leaning more towards warmer tones, neutrals are in. Creams and off-whites work brilliantly well to make your small bathroom feel graceful and airy by reflecting light and are a great canvas for all kinds of furniture including those with a wood vibe, blues, greens, pinks, taupes and more.

Taupes, sands, putties and clays will bring an earthy feel to your bathroom and in matt finishes generate a soft, modern look and feel.

Tile finish is key to how warm or cool your space feels. A taupe toned tile in a polished finish speaks of luxury and will reflect light and can make a space feel cooler. That same tile in a natural matt finish will absorb light adding a cosier vibe to your bathroom.

Even wood effect tiles are available in larger formats. Our Serenity collection is in both a 1215 x 195mm size and a large format plank size at 1510 x 240mm adding a touch of the luxurious to bathrooms.

Snap! Walls & Floors

Using the same large format porcelain tiles to adorn your walls and floors creates a wonderfully cohesive design. After all, if you can grace your bathroom walls with large format marble effect porcelain tiles, why not your floor too?

 Underfloor heating

Waking on a floor with heat beneath your feet is sooo nice! Large format porcelain tiles work like a charm with underfloor heating systems, allowing any bathroom space to gain from this luxurious feature.

Installation tips for your small bathroom makeover

  1. Large format porcelain tiles are heavy and require precision cutting, so it’s best to hire a professional to carry out your project.
  2.
  3. A high-quality adhesive is necessary for large format tiles which require strong bonding for durability.
  4.
  5. Choosing a 2-3 mm grout line will enhance the seamless effect of your large format porcelain tiles.
  6.
  7. Finally, pair your design with slick fixtures such as a wall-hung toilet, floating vanities or a frameless glass shower to maximise the sense of space in your brand-new bathroom.
