An intro to 800x800 paving slabs

Poise silver 20mm stone porcelain tiles for outside

In this blog we explore 800×800 paving slabs and how these large format garden flooring tiles are a great size for outside spaces. With the continued rise of porcelain as the perfect pick for patios there is so much to consider when looking for that perfect patio tile. Tile thickness, colour, finish, design and quality are just a few – and size of tile is also key. With a range of sizes and formats available we look specifically at 800×800 paving slabs and why this is such a great size if you are opting for a square tile.

800x800 paving slabs

All our 800×800 paving slabs are in a 20mm thickness. They are perfectly rectified and squared and have an anti-slip surface finish. The 20mmm thickness means they are versatile (they can be installed onto gravel, onto sand, onto grass onto pedestals as well as a traditional installation onto concrete), they will deliver a crisp architectural look and feel when installed and have the grip required for an external space.

In the same way size of tile is a key consideration for an internal space, it also equally important for an external space. Tile size can transform a space and whilst smaller tiles eg 600 x 300mm or 600 x 600mm formats are great, for areas that can take it, 800×800 paving slabs bring a perfect balance. This format adds a touch of luxury to a space with a lovely large format feel and less grout lines. In addition, 800×800 paving slabs are easier to work with from a installation perspective than some giant jumbo formats such as 1m x 1m and 1200 x 1200mm tiles. So this is a tile format that is large enough to bring the wow factor yet small enough that handling isn’t too tricky. And that’s what we like about it.

Using 800x800 paving slabs in an outside space

For an economical and quick install, they can be laid using the dry installation method either onto grass or gravel. And 800 x800mm 2cm porcelains are ideal for creating steps and pathways or linking spaces in the garden itself. Or, if your aim is to create that outside room then installation onto a fully cured concrete bed with the right tile adhesives will deliver an ‘inside room’ outside feel. This gives you maximum planning ability with minimal effort.

Of course, our blog is not an exhaustive guide to installation and which ever installation method you choose, we would always recommend you employ the services of a professional installer.

The benefits of porcelain garden flooring tiles

There are a whole host of reasons to choose porcelain 800×800 paving slabs for your external paving material. All our tiles are high quality Italian porcelains and a quick run through demonstrates why they are a great choice for outside spaces:

Frostproof – porcelain stoneware surfaces don’t freeze – to be called porcelain tiles have to have a porosity level of less than 0.05%.

Stain resistant – because of their low porosity level porcelain is highly stain resistant so even when using this material for a dining or cooking area outside it is a great option.

Antislip – all our 2cm outdoor tiles have an Antislip or textured surface.

Hardwearing– they are designed to witstnd weight

Thermal shock –  they are highly resistant to sudden changes in temperature.

Hygienic – porcelain naturally inhibits the growth of mould or moss on the surface (unless they are in a very dark, dank corner that does not receive any sunlight!).

Easy to maintain – porcelain does not need any sealing or ongoing maintenance. A sweep and jetwash are all that is really required to keep them in tip top condition.

Inside Outside Spaces

Pretty much all of our garden flooring tiles have a co-ordinating tile inside too. The beauty here is you can connect lounge to lawn with the same tile as shown here. We said earlier that the choice of tile size can make a huge difference to spaces. Less grout lines equal less buys spaces and opting for a tile where you have a closely matching grout colour will also open up space and give an airy feel. No imagine using the same tile outside. With minimal thresholds and contemporary sliding doors becoming the go-to for home developments, extensions and makeovers, more and more of us are choosing to create that feeling of flow from inside to outside space.

Porcelain brings a new perspective to outside spaces. Quite different from the look and feel of a traditional stone, for example limestone, or a slate, Porcelain delivers precision whereas the former bring more rustic charm. Which material you opt for will depend very much on the kind of space you are looking to create.

As we discussed earlier, all our porcelain tiles have rectified edges. That means the edges are straight and that is what allows you to have very thin grout lines and precision installation. Once installed, a porcelain tiled space is clean, crisp and architectural. Effectively it is an inside room, but outside. And that space can therefore become a kitchen, dining, lounge or relaxation space. With a myriad of furniture options specifically for outside spaces you really can let your imagination run wild. Add to that canopies to protect from inclement weather and you really can cleverly extend your inside space. Well-chosen planters, beautiful furniture and a dash of design can open up endless possibilities.
