Are porcelain tiles good for showers?
Are porcelain tiles good for showers? The answer is a resounding yes and for so many different reasons. In fact, this versatile material is not only good for showers it can really add the wow factor and give you the opportunity to turn your shower area into a gorgeous feature or a space with a luxurious spa look and feel.
More than ever before, our bathrooms are spaces we are using to really showcase amazing design. These spaces are no longer just a functional space, the bathroom or shower room has carved out a special role in the home, with more of us seeking to create spaces with that “spa at home” feel. Porcelain tiles are the perfect companion for creating stunning showers and bathrooms – not just because of their look but also because of their superb practicality and excellent performance. We look at three key reasons why porcelain tiles are good for showers.
Superb design potential
Porcelain tiles have played an essential role in bathroom design for so many years. With tiles that emulate so many other materials from stone to metal, concrete to marble, slate to cements, woods and limestone, you really can get creative with your shower and bathroom. But it’s not just the amazing design potential of porcelain tiles. Tile texture plays a huge role too adding another dimension to spaces. Tiles are no longer just a couple of designs and a standard matt or polished finish. Now collections house a host of different designs per tile bringing incredible variation across walls and floors and there are a bunch of amazing tile finishes to choose from too. Tile finishes have come on leaps and bounds over the past few years with textures that truly bring warmth to spaces and are practical for the bathroom too. So as well as those polished and matt finishes there are tile finishes including soft, natural, textured, silk, contour and more.
All this means your shower can be turned into a unique space that is not only eye catching, this space becomes a feature in your room with the wow factor and you feel you are stepping into a little bit of luxury.
Ease of installation and maintenance
Porcelain tiles are ideal for both walls and floors. Tile formats have definitely increased over the last few years with larger tiles that were once the preserve of the interior design world fast becoming the go-to for our homes. Larger tiles bring a “more tile, less grout” approach which can help to make spaces feel calmer and less busy. It’s thanks to tile technology and innovation that many larger tiles are designed to be thinner aiding installation with easier on site cutting.
Ease of cleaning is key for most of us and porcelain tiles don’t require any sealing or ongoing maintenance. They are incredible easy to maintain and highly stain resistant.
Tile performance
Bathrooms can be busy spaces dealing with the hustle and bustle of every day life and coping with maximum usage at specific times in the morning and evening. They are also the most humid room in the home so choosing the right materials for these spaces is key. Shower areas need to cope with even more humidity in a confined space so the product you choose for your shower walls is critical. Porcelain is the perfect product. Thanks to a whole host of excellent technical properties, porcelain tiles are non-porous making them highly resistant to mould and bacteria and of course, they are water-proof. It is essential to ensure your shower area is correctly waterproofed behind your tiles and correct installation of your tiles is key. Also ensure you using a high-quality suitable grout and sealant. Ultimately, you don’t want any water to seep through any cracks.
Another great benefit of porcelain tiles is the fact they are available in a range of finishes and slip ratings. From a safety perspective for floors, porcelain should be in a suitable rating for bathrooms with higher slip ratings for wet room floors (a minimum R11 A+B+C is essential for wetroom floors). Always check the slip resistance for floor tiles especially shower floors in wetrooms where you are standing on the tiles in the shower – this is because this area can be very slippery when wet because of the addition of soap and shampoo.
