They can be colourful, neutral or in subtle shades and our collections include some standout feature tiles for the home that can add a bold, bright flash to walls aswell as more subtle patterns and designs. So, if you are looking to breathe new life into the walls and floors in your home read on and find out more about our feature tiles and how they can elevate any room.

What is a feature tile?

A feature tile is designed to create a focal point whether that’s on the floor or wall. It is designed to stand out from the surrounding tiles and create interest, draw attention, serve as a design statement and even add colour to a room. Contrasting shapes, handcrafted finishes, sculptured shapes, glossy textures, bold patterns and vibrant colours are all key characteristics of feature tiles. They are generally used on bathroom walls, for kitchen splashbacks or for accent floors.

These are tiles that should turn heads and define spaces. In a sea of gorgeous neutral tones and pared-back palettes, the feature tile can stand out as a focal point or can pull a whole room of sought after neutral tones together.  They are available in both porcelain and ceramic materials and both tile types bring something unique to spaces.

Porcelain feature tiles are denser and less porous than their ceramic counterparts and that makes them ideal for high traffic, shower and even outdoor spaces. They are highly durable.

Ceramic tiles are softer than porcelain tiles, they are lighter in weight and easier to cut so lend themselves to walls.

Where to use feature tiles

The Bathroom

As bathrooms move from just being about the functional to spaces in which we can relax as we seek that spa like feel, more and more of us are looking to create bathrooms that have a warm, welcoming and nurturing feel to them. Ceramic and Porcelain tiles play a huge part in creating this look. With earthy colour tones the current go-to for these spaces opting for a lovely large format warm toned tile for floor and walls can work a treat and if you want to add a splash of interest then bring on the feature tile.

You may want to stay neutral and opt for a feature tile that is in similar tones but with texture. This is the ultimate in terms of serene design.

Or you may want to create a focal point behind that free standing bath or to the rear of a stunning vanity unit with a splash of colour to really highlight the sanitaryware and create impact upon entering the room.

Or fun and quirky may be more your go-to. In which case you may want a feature tile for the bathroom floor that creates interest through bold patterns and is a colourful canvas for your space.

Whatever you choose, the general rule is no more than 3 different tiles in any space! Otherwise, it is tricky to bring the design together and your space can look cluttered.

Kitchen Splashbacks

Using feature tiles behind the cooker or sink isn’t just about stopping water splashes, it is an opportunity to add to your interior design with eye-catching design. Lay patterns for feature tiles can add even more interest – think herringbone, stacked, brick bond and more. Metallic tiles can really bring your splashback to life and the surfacing of these tiles can really add some light reflectance too.

Hallways, open plan areas and more

Sometimes you want to create a showstopping feature wall in the lounge, in the hallway or in an open plan area. Feature tiles can, of course, work in these areas too, complimenting your chosen floor tiles.

Trends to look out for

Textured tiles – without any doubt we are seeking out tiles that add warmth to spaces and that isn’t just through colour. Texture plays a huge role, and leading manufacturers are using cutting edge technology to create tile finishes that enhance the look and feel of porcelain and ceramic tiles.

Muted earthy tones – soft sages, sands, taupes and terracottas are all bringing a natural feel to spaces and can be found on patterned tiles that add a warming note to spaces. Take our Adore collection featuring a hand-kneaded look with uneven surfacing that plays with the light. These tiles are in several tones and for a more neutral look and feel opt for sands and taupes.

Sculptured shapes – shapes and designs are highlighted beautifully by glossy textures like our Arc tile collection. These little porcelain tiles not only add colour they add style and shape to spaces.

Large format – feature tiles don’t have to be small. Oversized tiles can work brilliantly as feature tiles, take our Patina Blue Rust metallic feature tiles with their rectified, straight tile edges and minimal 3mm grout lines. They bring a stunning seamless look to walls.

Tall tiles – like our Papardelle collection of long, thin porcelains whose format feels contemporary but the non-rectified tile edges add a little rustic charm for a tile collection that effortlessly blends old and new.

Feature tiles can take your room design and turn it up a notch taking your space from basic to having the wow factor. Start exploring our stand-out collection of feature tiles and get creative with gloriously glossy tones, rich textures, bold colours and eye-catching patterns.
